Dear Families,
We are continuing to work at getting the Daily 5 literacy structure up and running in our classroom. We have enough stamina to do Read to Self for 10-20 minutes. Our goal is to consistently read to ourselves for 20 minutes. I'm sure we'll be adding Word Work soon.
I have administered the DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) to many of the students. I'm evaluating fluency and accuracy. This information will help me to work more effectively with your students as we begin more structured reading instruction. I will finish these evaluations this week.
In math, we are working in Unit 1: Reviewing Number and Time Concepts. Many of the students could use practice identifying pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters, along with knowing the values of these coins. The kids are pretty competent at reading an analog clock to the hour. We have learned touch math for adding one and two and have had math facts timings on plus zero and plus one.
Please remember to help prepare your child for Monday's writing by brainstorming what they did over the weekend with them.
Many of our pea seeds are sprouting! Soon it will be time to transplant them into the second grade garden. Our seed museum is empty except for my contributions. Please look for seeds in and around your house, mount and label them on a paper plate, and bring them to school to add to the display.
Several people have asked about volunteer opportunities. I am looking for 2 people to come in M-TH from 8:30-10:00 to help with reading, 1 person to come in M-TH from 11:45-12:45 for math. 1 person to do clerical work each week at your convenience, and several people to correct papers at home. I also need a room parent. If any of these opportunities appeal to you, please email me your preferences.
Enjoy your week!
