Week of February 14, 2011

Happy Valentine's Day!

Last week, we read Lions at Lunchtime and wrote about our favorite part. I hope your student shared some fascinating facts about giraffes, lions, hyenas, and/or honey guides.
This week we'll  read Mummies in the Morning, another of the Magic Tree House series books. It is set in Africa and will give us  information about mummies and pyramids in Egypt.

Last week in writing, the class wrote weekend news letters and began writing reports about hippos.

This week we'll write a Star of the Week letter to Alexandra, write weekend news letters, and continue writing hippo reports to go along with our study of Africa.

Last week, we began  Topic 8: Place Value: Numbers to 1,000.  We've been reading and writing 3-digit numbers. We're trying to remember to leave out the "and" when saying numbers in the hundreds. Speaking of hundreds, we had a great time celebrating Hundred's Day last Thursday. The projects the kids brought in were very creative!
This week we'll  work more with 3-digit numbers.

Last week we began making some 2-D animals for the background of our frieze (mural) of the Maasai Mara Game Reserve.  This week, we'll have an in-house field trip about animals, provided through Nature Vision.

The kids' valentine containers are adorable. I can't wait for you to see them when they come home today. Thanks again to all of you who sent in party supplies and took the time to come and help wih the party as well. Special thanks to Christine for organizing the fun!
