We ended a busy week with a celebration of International Talk Like a Pirate Day. I hope you enjoyed your student's pirate hat!
Last week we worked on stamina for Read to Self. We reached 20 minutes one day. I finished assessing the kids using the DRA. We also finished reading From Seed to Plant. A science book by Gail Gibbons. Please ask your student what he/she learned from this book. The kids took a comprehension reading assessment over the story as well.
This week we will read The Mixed Up Chameleon by Eric Carle. This story teaches us that it is better to be ourselves than to try to be someone else.
In math, we finished Topic 1 and took the assessment. We also worked on more of the touch math strategy, took some math facts timed tests, and did some word problem-solvers. Please encourage your student to make corrections and/or finish math papers and return them to school. These are part of homework for second grade, along with reading 20 minutes each night, and working on math facts for at least 5 minutes per night.
This week we'll begin Topic 2: Addition and Subtraction Strategies. We'll also continue with touch math and math facts timings.
In writing, we worked more on learning second grade handwriting. We also wrote a nice paragraph about pets, including topic and closing sentences. Watch for these to come home with your student on Monday. The kids did a very nice job with their first attempt at 4-square organized paragraphs. They also wrote friendly letters to the class telling of their weekend activities.
This week, we'll write more letters about our weekends, work on handwriting, write acrostic poems, and finish some Curriculum Night surprises.
Some of our pea plants are over 6 inches tall, while some of them have yet to show their little green heads. I guess they're just like people and develop in their own time!
We have been chosen to pilot a Social Skills curriculum for the school district. More information will be coming home soon!
Please join me for Curriculum Night on Wednesday, September 22. The evening begins in the multipurpose room at 6:30.
Student Stars of the Week begin this week. Please see the side tab for a schedule of students, as well as a schedule of special activities planned for your Star. All of these activities are optional. This is supposed to be a fun week for the kids, so they can have a week to shine!
Volunteers have begun to pour into our classroom and/or to work from home. Thanks to all of you who have emailed me with your desired days and times. It's not too late to sign up. Please email your preferences to delurmej@svsd410.org and I'll confirm with you and add you to the volunteer calendar (See side tab for link.)
I'm still trying to unravel the email mysteries, so please remain patient & I'll keep working to resolve the problems.
