Homework How-tos

Homework consists of 20 minutes of reading each night. Time spent reading should be recorded on the reading/math homework log. The log will also need a parent signature. The reading portion of this log will serve two purposes. First, for your homework grade on the report card and second for the King County Library Reading Program. If you turn in a log with at least 20 minutes read on 20 days during the month, you will be eligible for a free book.

The second part of homework will be to practice math facts for at least 5 minutes each day. This can be done with flashcards, playing dice games, online practice (see math website section on this blog), etc. This practice time will also be recorded on the reading/math homework log. Second graders are required to know all of their basic addition and subtraction facts through 18. Math facts fluency really pays off as math becomes more complex in upper grades.

The reading/math log will be due on the first school day of each month. In order to receive a "3" for homework on your report card, this log must be turned in on time.

Finally, you may bring home unfinished work or work that needs to be corrected. This is also considered homework and is due the next day.
